A great location in the centre of Newcastle and an impressive building. It has the feel of somewhere that was once really grand but needs a bit of money spending on it now. The rooms are spacious and we had a double sized family room, which was lovely, but basics like bedside tables are missing. There was also a pool and spa area, which was an unexpected bonus but looked a bit tired in places. The staff were all very friendly and helpful.

I appreciate the hotel is old, but the room was in desperate need of deep clean. Some areas need a refurb as there was a crack in the sink and the bathpanel needed some attention. The thick dust on higher areas of the room, curtains and bathroom fan was unpleasant to look at. One of the towels looked to have cigarette burns or some type of marks on it. The room wasn’t really suitable for smaller children in that it was split level. Staff gave no information regarding leisure facilities at check in and did not ask about the stay at check out.

Nice and clean, comfy bed, good food etc. Really disappointed we were not told in advance there would be no mattress with the baby cot after specifically calling about it. Also a big pity the swimming pool is way too cold for smaller children.

Initially good impression - very grand exterior & foyer, and room 212 was clean & contemporary. However, there must be hot water pipes running alongside & underneath room 212 as it was uncomfortably hot the entire time. Floors felt like there was underfloor heating, and leaving the window open & fan on high speed made no difference. We couldn't sleep the 1st night, and my family member was getting so hot that she was close to passing out. Spoke to reception the next morning, and she made up a rubbish excuse of this just being the way Victorian buildings are (even though our house is Victorian and has no such issue) and that air-con units couldn't be fitted because it's a listed building. Our request for a different room was denied. Later in the evening, we decided to speak to reception again to request a new room or check out 1 night early. Thankfully, there was a different receptionist who offered to move us to room 239. This room didn't have the same issue, although we could hear thuds from the ceiling at night & in the morning, the bathroom door couldn't close (too big for doorway) and no milk was provided with tea & coffee in the room. There were a few other guests making complaints when we were at reception, so we're not alone. No complaints about the cleaner - all friendly & did an excellent job. But because of our experience, won't be coming back
