This has been a hotel on my bucket list for at least 50 years. I’m not quite sure why, but it has. We were having a family reunion in PR so I decided to fly in a day early and check one thing off my ever growing list. Mission accomplished! We enjoyed our stay. It was fun to imagine the nuns swishing thru the halls in their habits, pushing thru the very heavy ancient doors. Air conditioning was great, beds were very comfortable, and staff was accommodating. Location in OSJ can’t be beat, and we felt very safe in the area.

El Convento is a seriously charming authentically Spanish colonial hotel. There is nothing to beat that jn either old San Juan or Condado!
Food in both restaurants was delicious and of a high standard but not ridiculously expensive. Wine was, though!
Our room was recently renovated I think - modern and well-appointed. The inly slight drawback was that it was next to the pool and there were children continually screaming until 9.30 pm!
Staff were all very friendly and helpful.

The hotel is nice and staff is welcoming and helpful. We had a family room which is two a joining rooms. They had high ceilings, luxury linens, each room had its own bathroom—very nice. Oh, they even provide a nice hair straightener! Which is nice when you’re from the US. So you don’t have to have a converter. The only thing I didn’t realize when booking was that the street the hotel is on doesn’t allow cars so you have to be dropped off around the corner. But we saw when we got here that it isn’t really a big deal. We also got breakfast with our room and this location was perfect for walking to many sights and for great restaurants.

We booked a junior suite for my birthday weekend but we’re awoken to toxic chemicals coming through the vent in the middle of the night. It was so bad that we couldn’t breathe and started having coughing fits. We rushed to the lobby where we were joined by a number of guests in the lobby who all experienced the same issue. They reassigned a room at 3am. It’s extremely negligent and irresponsible of the hotel to have the floors in the above room redone with polyurethane.
Their solution was moving rooms at 3am and a breakfast voucher.
What should have been a wonderful stay in a beautiful historic building in old San Juan turned into a nightmare.
Shame on them for booking guests in the surrounding rooms where they knew toxic chemicals would be used.

Loved the ambience! Loved the community! Loved the variety of food and nightlife close by! It felt like I really was in a comment very quiet and peaceful. I loved going in the pool and the hot tub even though they were both way smaller than they look in the picture. I love the fact that there were no children running around. I love the fact that it was on Hills so I felt like I was getting exercise in even though they had no gym. I wish the restaurant would have served breakfast on site it's my favorite meal of the day and I did not like having to go to a cafe and have an egg sandwich when they had a beautiful facility and space to create that for their guests if they wanted to. The lady at check-in was very helpful and accommodating. Although the beach was very far, they partnered with Caribe Hilton which was the nicest of six beaches that I was on throughout San Juan and piñones, although the water was clearest on the public beach a little bit north of Condado near the old Normandy. If I were going to stay in San Juan again I'd probably like to stay at El convento again. A channel guide in English and a blanket besides the sheet would also be appreciated in the rooms.

Oh man! This was truly terrible. We arrived at 10 am and check in was supposed to be at 3pm. BY 4:30pm we still didn't have room. Then they gave us a room way below the class that we had paid facing trash bins and with blood stains on the sheets. We had to complain very strongly until they finally gave us another room. The mattress were so old and bent that I could barely sleep. We had a 2 year old kid with us and the music was so loud at night that she couldn't go to sleep, neither could we. The hotel is beautiful, but you can visit it and not stay there. Frankly, it ruined our vacation, the staff were helpless and seemed overwhelmed by the situation. Stay away from it. Visit it, because is quite pretty and the restaurants are good, but stay somewhere else.
