My family and I have been staying in the area while visiting other family at the UAB hospital. We stayed here 1 night and it was absolutely fantastic! Beautiful building, comfortable and clean rooms, and friendly staff! The breakfast was also great! So we decided to stay here again the following night. While the room was still great, I couldn’t say the same about the service the secone time. The woman at the front desk seemed to be in a bad mood and it was very obvious. She was not very friendly and had a bad attitude with us at check in. There was a small mix up with our room reservations and when I had kindly mentioned it, she immediately got very defensive. I told her it was totally ok; mistakes happen. But her attitude remained the same. When she gave me the new room key she slapped it down on the counter and said “7th floor” and immediately turned away without saying another word and walked into her back office and closed the door. So that was a little disappointing. Again, I still find this place to be wonderful and will definitely recommend it to other travelers. I just hope whoever the woman was behind the desk has some better days.

This was a great experience for me and my kids. We went to a concert at the BJCC and had to check in late, but had no problems getting our car valet parked and getting in our room safely and with great service! Room was clean, beautiful view, and breakfast was great! Will stay here again for sure.

I’ve never not had a refrigerator or microwave. The site said there would be one as we were traveling with a baby.

The air-conditioning in the room wasn't working, so we had to be moved to another room. Thank goodness it was right next door, it was a lot better and the room was a lot bigger. Hilton should not be charging the same price for the room we had to be moved from. Also it could have been a lot cleaner, around the tub and tolet area was nasty. You may want to spray the room for spiders, cause I killed one on the bed in the room we moved to. We had to be in town, cause my newborn grandbaby was flown in from Mobile to Children's Hospital for Open heart surgery.

PRO: hotel has character because it is a historic building (early 20th century) named after a local figure; it has marble steps in the lobby along with a baby grand piano and a marble front porch that is inviting. CON: needs to be upgraded. The shower had a serious, out of control grout problem. The bathroom sink had so many scratches from overuse that it needs replacement. maybe because of COVID-related issues, but I never had any room cleaning for three days. Finally, the staff had promised that upon an early arrival, I would be given a room. But I had to wait 2.5 hours. Discouraging. Finally, the hotel is in a "food desert," that is no restaurants except in hotel.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Tutwiler. It is truly a reincarnation of the original Dinkler-Tutwiler that we remembered from our childhoods. Our room was huge and very nicely appointed. Of course, the beds were up to Hampton Inns high standard of comfort. Everything was super clean and comfortable. We stayed in for dinner at the hotel's restaurant and had a delicious meal. And breakfast was ample and good. The location of the hotel is also perfect. So, we will definitely stay there any time we come back to Birmingham.

Visiting as part of a Civil Rights Tour with family that lives in Nashville. We love staying in the older "restored" hotels, and this was the perfect end of the day spot. FYI Parking is Valet only
