Hilton Garden Inn Iowa City Downtown University

Booked this hotel based on specific room type. When I checked in and got to my room it was a different room type. Went back downstairs to front desk and attendant explained that my purchased/prepaid room type was unavailable and they knew this when they gave me the key but didn’t bother explaining or letting me know (I guess they wanted to surprise me). I requested a refund so that I could go to another hotel with the room I needed. They explained that they could not do this. I explained that the room type given to me would not work. They apologized and agreed that it was a bummer I had a room I could not sleep in. I then asked for rollaway bed, which they agreed to. Very frustrating that I needed to troubleshoot and solve the issue to a disinterested attendant after a long drive with 2 kids. Next morning was charged for breakfast although we had prepaid for breakfast. Hotel was in good condition, will try somewhere else next time I am in Iowa City.

I checked into my room and the tv was broke and they got me a new room and I wanted to pay for a movie and that’s not an option, I had to watch regular cable tv and I was in a seminar for 2 days and couldn’t watch a movie. The food was strange and very spicy. I asked if I could do just a regular cheeseburger or plain shrimp instead of the spicy version and I was told no… Then I ordered a White Zinfandel, which is a basic glass of wine & didn’t have it. So I had to go through asking about Chablis or Chardonnay & she told me no. I had to walk to the other hotel next door to get a Mt Dew. The parking was a mess, no one helped me with my bags and I was alone. It just didn’t have much personal service and I had to use my key card even to take the elevator. I also didn’t get my seminar room rate. I just was not impressed and I was disappointed. I had 2 nights away from my kids and I couldn't get anything I wanted. I would’ve stayed next door at the hotel if I would’ve known. They had everything I wanted.

This was a lousy experience. We got into the room and the kids sleep couch wasn’t made and had old sheets on. I was told by management to fix it and myself and housekeeping handed me sheets . The breakfast was average at best and the breakfast attendant was overbearing and pushing for tips.

Nice location, walkable to ped mall, clean and modern. Friendly staff. Pet friendly. Parking costs $15 and is a little inconvenient (you have to drive around the block to enter the ramp). No free breakfast. Overall, this is a favorite of ours in Iowa City when we visit family in the area, since we can bring our cat and also are close to the downtown area.

We stayed on NYE with lots of activity in lobby and elevators. Had our grandchildren with us to swim and stay. Not once did we have issues with the elevators or feeling in the way> Will be back!
