Breakfast was absolutely terrible! Our rom which the employee told us was the best room in the hotel was on the 6th floor, the patio door wouldn’t lock so we were left with no sleep due to our children in the room and making sure they didn’t wonder out there. We called the front desk to get the lock fixed and nobody ever showed up. The dust cobwebs around the room were everywhere and the bed and pillows were so flat and uncomfortable. I reached out to see what Dan be done and of course still no response! Other’s rooms were so humid water was literally dripping down the walls. We didn’t dare go in the pool the water was so cloudy it undoubtedly needed treated. There wasn’t a single smell of chlorine anywhere near that pool like one would expect for a public pool.

We paid the extreme cost so we were close to everything and that was wonderful. The room was dirty. Hair in sink and carpet was ripped and really needed a shampooer to it. My kids socks were black after being on carpet. The pull out couch was horrible. If you like to sleep with stained mattress and a bar in your back. Then sleep on that one. Breakfast was great and staff was nice. Can’t say I will stay there again.

Our family stayed one evening. Hotel was very clean and updated along with the rooms. The shower had very weak water pressure and had scaling built up on it. We used the fitness room and pool, and were disappointed to find the hot tub/whirlpool was the same temp as the pool- something wasn’t working. Fitness room was nice and had a Peloton I used - I used my own subscription but they had a hotel one you could also use. Parking in the garage was an additional $15 per night, which was fine. Would have rated 5 stars if not for the hot tub being cold and the shower needing some maintenance.

Good location, room was clean and comfortable. Check in and check out weren’t good. Check in lady was very rude to the family ahead of us, and very abrupt but competent when we checked in. Check out was terrible. After waiting about 8 minutes for staff member to show up, she arrived with breakfast from the kitchen. She was unpleasant and took forever to check us out seemingly having a problem figuring out how to split our bill. She made us feel we were being unreasonable. We were polite at all times.

We arrived and had a great check in experience. We found our room clean and bright. Later in the afternoon we found that a large number of child groups were staying at the hotel. The halls were loud and busy. This carried over into the pool area. We were unable to use the pool and hot tub due to the large quanity of people. The floor around that area is tiled and was a huge slip hazard. There are set hours for this area of the hotel and there are no hours for adult use only. The bed in our room was extremely hard and we woke with back aches and the pillows were very flat. We recommend to bring your own pillow. Breakfast was good and so was our check out.

This was our second stay at the new Hampton in downtown Des Moines. While our room was much smaller this time (on our first stay, right after they opened last winter, they upgraded us at no cost to their biggest room to help accommodate two cribs for our one-year-old twins), it was still comfortable, clean, and roomy enough. The rooms have a nice, modern aesthetic.
Staff were helpful with bringing an extra bath mat when our kids soaked the first one, and they were awesome about looking for, finding, and returning to us the Amazon Fire Stick that my husband accidentally left attached to the TV when we left.
The breakfast was always well-stocked when we were there (7:30 or 8 a.m. most days) and had a decent selection. A little more cut fruit would be nice, but staples like bananas were available.
Our only complaint is the price of parking. The downtown hotels seem to be hit or miss with regard to parking prices; some offer free parking, others have you use city lots that charge during the week but not on weekends, etc. This hotel shares a dedicated garage with another hotel, so it's always pay to park. Because we are often staying in Des Moines around the holidays when winter weather is likely, it's been worth it to pay to park in a garage, but it would be nice if it were a bit cheaper per day.
While we weren't able to take advantage of it this time due to time constraints, the Science Center is an easy walk from the hotel and is a great place to visit with kids!
