This was a weekend trip with my nieces so we got a family room, which allowed for 2 bedrooms and a small kitchen, very nice, at a very affordable price. The Hotel does not have A/C but has ceiling and other fans, and is in the tropical forest so it was comfortably cool. Low key, local, very friendly. Comes with motel cats for we cat lovers. 7-10 minute walk to Hilo town and the farmers market, very convenient. Overall a great stay. I may come again with my husband for a fall weekend getaway. Also Hilo is easy to access Volcano National Park.

This is the cutest little hotel! It’s like staying with friends or family. The staff is SO nice and the grounds are beautiful. Very well maintained and clean despite being retro. Loved the hot coffee and banana bread each morning and even enjoyed Obie the cat coming in to stay with us one night.

Loved this place - super friendly staff, fresh banana bread in the AM, and fresh papaya too. We had the family suite, and found it to be very comfy. Wish we could have stayed longer than one night.

We truly loved our stay at Dolphin Bay hotel! The suite option drew us in, having a 5 person family. So very nice to have beds for 5! This is an older hotel, but very clean and well maintained. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the banana bread and fresh papaya in the morning was a great local touch. We would absolutely stay here again when in Hilo.

We were only in Hilo for two nights but the beauty and wonder of the place, including our family studio at the Dolphin Bay had us longing for a longer stay. The room was perfect for 3 adults. The kitchenette was nicely stocked and everything was clean and comfortable. The grounds were beautiful and we enjoyed the banana bread and the papaya in the morning. We would definitely stay here again.

The hotel had true Hawaiian feel to it. It was very roomy and had all the amenities we needed. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The family loved the fresh banana bread in the morning and the perfectly ripe papayas available in the lobby. The cats were even super friendly.

This was a beautiful family stay for a family of 5, all adults. The staff accomodated greatly giving us a large room, and the reception hospitality was attentive and personal. They had fresh whole papaya's set out in the morning with banana bread and coffee. The balcony was useable, and rooms had screens on windows for good airflow. They also had a small garden area to wander. Overall, this was an affordable, clean, accomodation...leaving pleasant memories!

This is an older property, but very clean, and we loved the family suite with room for 5 of us and a small kitchen. The staff was very friendly, and the free banana bread and fruit was delicious.

This is a Motel type property with outdoor hallways. Doesn't look "beautiful" from the exterior, but not "bad" either. Next door to a BEAUTIFUL tropical garden.
The room we stayed in was large and comfortable. it had 2 doors, one going out the front, one the back. (very convenient for parking) had a full kitchen and a seperate bedroom. The room decor was not new, but it was clean and comfortable and we had everything we needed.
The folks managing the property seem to care about what they do. Fresh coffee, delicious banana bread and very friendly.
One thing to keep in mind. My wife spent the 1st night by herself, she had never heard birds sing at night like they have in Hilo. I mean, they are LOUD. So loud, my wife thought the Hotel had speakers outside playing bird tracks. (really). So, if you're a light sleeper, bring ear plugs (although the hotel provided those too)
We would go back, but we'd be careful who we'd recommend this hotel to. If you're expecting a 3-4 star corporate type hotel....This isn't it. If you're okay with family style, comfortable but a little shabby chic then this might fut the bill.
