I stayed at the Fenwick Hotel recently to do some family history research and meet some of my new cousins for the first time. The food was delicious and the wait-staff, especially Aileen, were excellent! There is a good selection of mixed drinks and beers on tap in the bar. The public spaces have been renovated and makes the hotel look very up-to-date and modern. The problem is they haven't finished updating the hotel rooms. While my cousin had a newly refurbished room (room 4), I had room 11 which didn't appear to be renovated and was just plain awkward. The room wasn't uncomfortable, but it was clear that little attention was paid to details. The lamp above the bed had a broken lampshade which was hanging over the edge of the sconce bracket. The light bulb was also clearly burnt out. They taped the lampshade back on the 2nd day I was there, but never changed the bulb. The room had a nice large desk to work from, but their was no lamp to light it... the garbage can for the room, was under the desk chair, which I kept knocking over whenever I moved. The bathroom looked like it had been modernized, but this dumb American could NOT get the shower to work no matter how hard I tried. It was either blazingly hot or freezing cold.
There was a coffee/tea maker in the room which I used every day, but would have liked a mini refrigerator.
All-in-all, I enjoyed my stay, but look forward to one of the 'new rooms' next time I visit.
